What Does it Mean to be an Egyptian Scribe?
This piece of text is a journal entry from an Egyptian scribe, or what one might look like. It explains, what it means to be an Egyptian scribe, what materials they used, who could be a scribe, and other interesting things. it has been translated from this:
this is what it says, "greetings, I am a scribe. it is a very important job." It is not very much. So we have extended the text. Here it is.
I have recently gotten my job as a scribe. I had to attend a school to learn to be a scribe. It could take four or five years to complete the studies at the school. For me it was only four years. Only few Egyptians get to be scribes, and it is usually men. So I was a lucky one. Most people can only be scribes through family heritage. Each day the other new scribes and I practice on limestone flakes. Now that I have gotten the job, it is a lot harder than limestone flakes. But we do get to write on paper and use a reed, and sometimes help officials. If we are lucky enough we can help the Pharaoh. But I have yet for that day to come. It is still a huge honor, and stress, to have this job and I can hopefully one day be honored by every one as the scribe of the king.
